If you're like me (god forbid) you probably played with, or at least remember the Mattel HotWheels miniature toy cars from the early 1970's. They were very cool looking and pretty fast little suckers depending on how fast you pushed of course. Two in particular that stand out in my childhood memories are the "Snake and Mongoose" cars.

The Mongoose was red and the Snake was yellow. The cars were modeled after the funny cars of real life Drag Racers Tom "the Mongoose" McEwen and Don "the Snake" Prudhomme, who began their racing careers in the 1960's.
These two men were friends as well as rivals, each having been a champion driver and drag racing team owner. Mattel sponsored these two drivers to promote their HotWheels brand name, becoming the first non-auto related sponsors car racing had seen to date. This eventually paved the way for similar sponsorship opportunities, thereby helping promote drag racing to what it has become today.
A movie chronicling the experiences of these two rival drivers, is set to be released in 2012.
